Lorna is bright, intelligent, witty, well educated with a university degree, and works as a research and development engineer with Prodrive, a career which she thoroughly enjoys.
And yet despite that, she still wants to be a professional rally driver.
It's a family thing. Father Andy was a highly successful club rally driver in his youth and although he didn't encourage Lorna to take the wheel has been entirely supportive since she first showed an interest combined with a natural aptitude.

As is the way with many would-be rally drivers, level of competition and equipment was determined by budget. For the first couple of years, Lorna campaigned a fierce front wheel drive Ford Fiesta with over 200 bhp in sprints and hillclimbs regularly gubbing the blokes and setting class records.
" Make no mistake,
Lorna Smith is not 'a lady rally driver'.
Lorna is a rally driver full stop!"
John Fife - Motorsport Journalist & Broadcaster
The car was converted to rally spec and despite its unsuitability for the forests, Lorna gained much valuable experience in her first season as she grabbled with lots of power, no grip and slippery surfaces. Her first 'proper' rally car was a Volkswagen Polo - which she crashed! Time for something bigger and faster then.
Although somewhat outdated already, the current Mitsubishi Lancer EVO4, has been quick enough in Lorna's hands to raise eyebrows, not just among male rivals but amongst the spectating rally fans.
